A Still Life | Mike Cullinane

I cut the flowers for a still life,

                                    Smiling on the table top hunting joy;

Desiring to stand still while surrounded by strife.

The unforeseen triggers cut like a scythe,

Chaff left everywhere with each ploy.

I cut the flowers for a still life.

Pretty, well-kept houses with husband and wife,

The squeaking floor boards are the least to annoy.

Desiring to stand still while surrounded by strife.

The hang nail manicured with a penknife,

A wound easily mended with a bandage deploy.

I cut the flowers for a still life.

Being a paltry thing is not my walk of life,

This is the country for this old boy!

Desiring to stand still while surrounded by strife.

I shall take caution with living a half-life,

Caring for my heart and health to enjoy.

I cut the flowers for a still life,

Desiring to stand still while surrounded by strife.

Mike Cullinane has been writing for most of his life: post cards, letters, poetry, a brief journalism career and spellbinding corporate presentations. He is currently working on first chapbook collection. His point of view is motivated mostly by outdoor experiences where he lives, but of course there are always exceptions to any rule. He has contributed to anthologies published by Moonstone Arts Center of Philadelphia and individual pieces to The Galway Review, Sad Girl Diaries and Failed Haiku. Most days he is the project manager of his own life, serving friends and family as needed, while being mentored by his Grandson.
